About Phoenix
Phoenix is the largest city in Arizona. It is the capital of Arizona located in Maricopa county. The Phoenix metropolitan area, also known as the Valley of the Sun, is the 14th largest metro area in population in the US. Also, Phoenix, with a population of 1,445, 632 (2010) is the most populous state capital in the US. Currently, Phoenix is ranked 6th in population in the US.
When settled in 1867, the city was an agricultural community near the junction of the Salt and Gila Rivers. Phoenix incorporated as a city in 1881. As the city became established, it’s economy was primarily cotton, cattle, citrus, climate, and copper. Until industries came into the valley after World War II, Phoenix was a thriving farming community.
Located in the southwestern United States and in the south-central part of Arizona, Phoenix is almost halfway between Tuscon, AZ to the south and Flagstaff, AZ to the north. Due to its location in the Salt River Valley, Phoenix is known as the Valley of the Sun.
Generally Phoenix is flat, with the excetption of some mountains surronding the city:
McDowell Mountains (to the northeast)
White Tank Mountains (to the west)
Superstition Mountains (far to the east)
Sierra Estrella Mountains (to the southwest)
Phoenix does not observe daylight savings time (as with most of the state).
