About Phoenix

Phoenix is the largest city in Arizona. It is the capital of Arizona located in Maricopa county.  The Phoenix metropolitan area, also known as the Valley of the Sun, is the 14th largest metro area in population in the US.  Also, Phoenix, with a population of 1,445, 632 (2010) is the most populous state capital in the US. When settled in 1867, the city was an agricultural community near the junction of the Salt and Gila Rivers. Phoenix incorporated as a city in 1881. As the city became established, it’s economy was primarily cotton, cattle, citrus, climate, and copper.  Until industries came into the valley after World War II, Phoenix was a thriving farming community.

Located in the southwestern United States and in the south-central part of Arizona, Phoenix is almost halfway between Tuscon, AZ to the south and Flagstaff, AZ to the north.  Due to its location in the Salt River Valley, Phoenix is known as the Valley of the Sun.

Generally Phoenix is flat, with the excetption of some mountains surronding the city:

McDowell Mountains (to the northeast)

White Tank Mountains (to the west)

Superstition Mountains (far to the east)

Sierra Estrella Mountains (to the southwest)

Phoenix does not observe daylight savings time (as with most of the state).

Phoenix is divided into urban villages since 1979.  Each village has a planning committee that works with the city’s planning commission to ensure a balance of employment and housing in each village, promote the character and identity of each village, and to concentrate on developing the villages.

Phoenix also has some districts that are commonly referred to as Downtown, Midtown, West Phoenix, North Phoenix, South Phoenix, Biltmore, Arcadia, and Sunnyslope.

Found within Phoenix and surrounding areas are some native and unusual species:  roadrunners, gila monsters, javelinas, desert tortoises, and chuckwallas.  The state bird is the cactus wren.  The area also houses sonoran coralsnakes, western diamondback rattlesnak images es, and sonoran sidewinders.

 

One of the most famous kinds of cactus is found in Phoenix:  the giant saguaro cactus.  Other types of vegetation growing in the region include prickly pear and cholla cactus, Palo Verde trees, palm trees, agaves, creosote bush, and blue paloverde. The rosy-faced lovebird can be found in the greater phoenix region; the bird is a popular pet.

Sky Harbor Airport serves the Greater Phoenix area, and due to its climate, Phoenix is among the nation’s top destinations (over 16 million visitors each year).  A big attraction to visitors is golf, and the Phoenix are has over 200 courses.  Other attractions include Organ Pipe Cactus Nationial Monument, Agua Fria National Monument, Lost Dutchman State Park, and Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. Because Phoenix has such great beauty and climate conducive to recreational and outdoor activities, the city has many popular sites: Phoenix Botanical Gardens, South Mountain Park, the Phoenix Zoo, Camelback Mountain, Hole in the Rock, St. Mary’s Basilica, and Pueblo Grande Museum.

US Airways Center in downtown, Phoenix  is home of the NBA Phoenix Suns. The Major League Baseball team, the Arizona Diamondbacks began play in Phoeins in 1998.  The Diamondbacks play at Chase Field, famous for its swimming pool beyond the outfield fence.  Phoenix’s MLB team became the city’s first professional sports franchise to win a national championship when they won the World Series in 2001.  The Arizona Cardinals (NFL team), play at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.  The Cardinals have made one Superbowl appearance (XLIII) since moving to Phoenix. Arizona-Diamondbacks-MVP-Boxes-Section-320 Jobing.com Arena (next to the University of Phoenix Stadium) is home for the professional hockey team the Arizona Coyotes (NHL).  The Arizona Rattlers (Arena Football League) play at U.S. Airways Center in downtown Phoenix, and the Cactus League (MLB spring training league) has 15 MLB teams based in the Greater Phoenix Area.

Also in Phoenix is the Phoenix International Raceway, which hosts several NASCAR events each season.

Every January (since 2004) the Rock ‘n Roll Marathon series is held in Phoenix, as well as the Phoenix Marathon ( a qualifier for the Boston Marathon).
There are a large number of city, county, and national parks and recreation areas in Phoenix: Tonto National Forest, South Mountain Park, Sunnyslope Mountain (S Mountain) Camelback Mountain, Encanto Park, Hole-in-the-Rock, and Desert Botanical Garden. Due to the heat in the summer months, Phoenix has many waterparks like Big Surf (Tempe), Wet ‘n’ Wild Phoenis (Phoenix), and Golfland Sunsplash (Mesa).

The main institution of higher education in the Phoenix region is Arizona State University (Tempe). ASU does have campuses in Phoenix:  ASU West Campus, ASU Downtown Campus, and ASU Polytechnic Campus. (Mesa).  Also located in Phoenix is a satellite campus for Northern Arizona University based in Flagstaff.
